College Counseling

Planning

Your journey begins with a plan and ends with a variety of college choices and financial aid offers. While it’s important to look ahead, it’s just as important to take it step by step.

We’ll start with a conversation where I learn about your interests, classes, achievements, and summer activities – even what comes to mind when someone mentions “college.” We’ll talk about what these first steps entail, and look ahead to explore courses and activities that will build your college profile.

And then we’re off, exploring opportunities together and keeping a timeline of next steps.

Research

While we’re exploring those opportunities, you’ll discover what about colleges matters to you, like size, location, programs, and feel.

We’ll build your list and research your colleges. We'll set up your college dashboard, which keeps track of information about each school along with what you have learned, contacts you've made, and next steps. I'll also help you make the best use of college fairs and visits.

Together we’ll follow up on your plan - scheduling visits, contacting admissions, and reaching out to university schools or departments.

I’ll be there to help you communicate with admissions officers, deepen your relationships with colleges, and consider pre-college summer programs.

Applying

As you consolidate your list of colleges to apply to, we’ll begin your applications and start drafting your essays the summer before senior year. This way you’ll feel ahead of the game and confident that you have plenty of time to fine-tune before applications are due. We’ll devise an application strategy for each college you apply to, showcasing your strengths and working to convince each school that you are a great fit. We’ll also prepare you for any interviews.

Mark tutored my son on reading comprehension in preparation for the SAT. He felt Mark was a perfect fit — he improved his score considerably and used Mark’s help for his college essays. Mark’s coaching was invaluable.
